Initiates

Membership in Beta Phi Mu stresses more than grade point average: service and professional promise are also considerations. The international organization limits nominations to membership of 35% of any graduating class in any school with an active chapter. A grade point average of 3.75 (on a 4-point scale) is required for membership. At the School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, the faculty selects from that group of students the 35% to nominate for membership.

Graduate Requirements:

  • Completion of at least 50% of the total hours/credits required for the master’s degree with a scholastic average of no lower than 3.75 where A equals 4.0, or

  • Completion of planned programs of advanced study beyond the master’s degree which require full time study for one or more academic years with a scholastic average of 3.75 where A equals 4.0.

  • Each program may invite no more than thirty-five percent (35%) of the annual graduating class.

Undergraduate Requirements:

  • Completion of at least 50% of the total hours/credits required for the undergraduate degree, with a scholastic average of no lower than 3.75 where A equals 4.0

  • Recommendation by the faculty.

  • Total eligible candidates from a program shall comprise no more than thirty-five (35) percent of the annual graduating class.

  • Acceptance of invitation and payment of fees. There is no time limit for acceptance of invitation, but candidates must provide proof of invitation with payment of fees when accepting invitation to membership.

Renomination

Any individual who has been invited to join Beta Phi Mu in the past and now wishes to accept that invitation should contact the chapter that initially invited her or him to join and ask that chapter to send verification to headquarters that the person was invited to join. Upon receipt of this information and the person's name and address, the international office will issue an invitation to join, process the new member's application, and notify the chapter.

Graduates should contact Linda C. Smith, Professor Emerita, School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 501 E. Daniel Street, Champaign, Illinois 61820 or lcsmith@illinois.edu.
